Scholar urges FG to prioritize rail transportation of Petroleum products

 

Renowned Professor of surgery and specialist plastic surgeon, Professor Peter Babatunde Olaitan of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has tasked the Federal Government to reconsider transportation of petroleum products through rail over road in Nigeria.

 Delivering the third Lecture of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences of the University, he also said the Federal government should enact laws to enhance effective monitoring of tankers, drivers on the road towards reducing auto accidents.

 Delivering the third Lecture of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences of the University, he also urged the government to strive towards improving pipelines to avoid or reduce road transportation of fuel and gas.

 Treating the topic: “Beyond the Scars: Confronting the burden of Hydrocarbon burn injuries and disasters in Nigeria”, Olaitan called for more improvement of rail transportation over road of petroleum products.

 He added that government needed to also enact laws that will enable tankers involved in accidents to be cordoned immediately to prevent fuel scooping by community people as well as adequate education of the populace by the ministry of transportation.

 He canvassed monitoring of pipelines by security agents through helicopters and other means to avoid vandalization and the enactment of laws that will sanction companies whose tankers have recurrent accidents.
