LAUTECH scholar wins National Young Researcher's Award in Microbiology

The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso,  heartily congratulates Dr. Adetunji Joseph Elegbede of the Department of Pure and Applied Biology, Nigeria, on winning the 2026 edition of the Prof. Oyewale Tomori National Young Researcher's Prize in Microbiology under the auspices of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to microbiology.


The prize is funded by the renowned Professor of Virology, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, FAS, NNOM, FRCPath, a former Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer's University, Ede, Nigeria, and former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

This is indeed very good news, particularly as his supervisor, Prof. Agbaje Lateef, won the maiden edition of the prize in 2013 while at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Elegbede's emergence as the recipient 13 years later attests to the modest yet significant contributions of these scholars, and indeed LAUTECH, to the advancement of microbiology in Nigeria and beyond.

Dr. Elegbede, who defended his PhD in 2025, is the fourth scholar from LAUTECH to win an NYA Prize, following Prof. A. Lateef (Microbiology, 2013), Prof. O.S. Bello (Chemistry, 2016), and Dr. S.F. Abimbade (Mathematics, 2025).

His research has earned several notable recognitions. In 2017, aspects of his M.Tech. thesis were presented at the University of Ibadan, where he won third place at the International Conference on Scientific Research organised by the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan. His thesis also received the Best Master's Research Award at LAUTECH in 2021. 

In 2024, he was awarded the Global Development Fund Fellowship to the Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London, United Kingdom, where he conducted studies on aspects of his PhD research.

Dr. Elegbede has research experience in the circular bioeconomy, microbial valorisation of agrowastes, enzyme technology, and the biosynthesis, characterisation, and applications of metal, metal oxide, and alloy nanoparticles. 

Over the years, he has published twenty-eight articles in journals and books, which have been cited more than 1,400 times. His work has appeared in high-impact publications by Springer Nature, Elsevier, De Gruyter, and Taylor & Francis.

The University wishes Dr. Elegbede even greater heights in his future endeavours.
